This shield bug spp was a smart beast in the trap.

Swallow Prominent - a nice addition to the garden list - even if I did have to catch it in the morning on the side of the house rather than in the trap. I seemingly get a few spp this way.

5 August 2010 - Didcot, Oxon

Red Underwing - a huge beastie, seen here trying to nick my paving slabs. First seen last night, it was being attracted to some sugar I'd put out but was eventually caught whilst on the side ofthe house.

Straw Underwing - another species that probably would have gone misidentified had Marc not helped out (I had thought it was a Dusky Brocade - what a muppet eh?).

And finally, a very worn, melanic White-spotted Pug.

Square-spot Rustic - and to be honest I would have been left thinking about the ID for years had Marc not helped out!

Flounced Rustic - the first two of the year caught last night.

Canary-shouldered Thorn - a welcome addition to the ever growing list of garden spp.

My other macro interest before heading for Essex was this carpet - could this be a Gallium Carpet? I guess the answer is going to be no, but....

I include the underwing snap as it was very different from the Common Carpet underwing that I let go.

I was then Essex-bound for Hadleigh Castle Country Park and the Southern Migrant Hawkers that arrived and were slowly disappearing. Thankfully they haven't all gone or been eaten with this chap showing well - just hanging around, waiting for the sun to come out.

This Emperor made very swift work of a Gatekeeper.

Many Scarce Emerald Damselflies in the ditches at this site.

Shaded Broad-bar

Wall Brown - my first one for a couple of years now. Always good to see.

Gatekeeper -still loads at this excellent site.

Back in Oxfordshire, I resumed moth photography - nothing else new but these Uncertain Rustics still confuse...

Nutmeg - at least, that's what I think it is. Another individual that was caught on the brickwork and not in the trap.

Lychnis - A couple caught last night and nice to compare with the Campion caught a few evenings ago.

Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing - Just making sure it isn't a Langmaid's (which I think this picture shows it isn't).

Early Thorn - The sleeping one from yesterday was accidently kept for longer. So a few more snaps taken.

And finally - this wee fella caught my eye as it wondered across the patio. All of 2-3mm long (at most) - ID help appreciated!

Mouse Moth - a smooth and silky thing if everthere was one. ID caused me trouble as the beast in the flesh looked nothing like the image in the book. But now the image in the book looks pretty damn close to the beast in the picture.

Treble-bar - And the ID of these for me isn't very straight forward, or perhaps I've never caught a Lesser - or perhaps this is a Lesser and I've never caught an ordinary Treble-bar!!!

Turnip Moth - again. I confess I actually like these.
